What is a National Board Certified Health & Wellness Coach (NBC-HWC)?

National Board Certified Health & Wellness Coaches (NBC-HWCs) support clients in activating internal strengths and external resources to make sustainable and healthy lifestyle behavior changes. Health coaches use a client-centered approach wherein clients decide their goals, engage in self-discovery or active learning processes, and self-monitor behaviors to increase accountability.

The National Board for Health & Wellness Coaching (NBHWC) has collaborated with the National Board of Medical Examiners (NBME) since 2016 to provide a robust board certification examination which has led to more than 9,400 National Board Certified Health & Wellness Coaches that hold the NBC-HWC credential. The esteemed NBC-HWC credential represents training, education, and assessment standards, allowing for the profession to advance in all aspects of health care and wellness.

How Does Health & Wellness Coaching Work?

Coaching begins with a partnership between a coach and a client, which takes place over a 3-6 month period. The coach assists the client in creating a vision of their ideal health based on the client’s current health, desired health and personal values.

The client then chooses 1-2 measurable goals that they wish to meet by the end of the 3-6 month period (i.e. “lose X amount of weight,” “run X miles/X times per week,” etc.). The coach and client meet bi-weekly — virtually or in-person — to work on smaller action steps in an effort to reach the greater goal(s). Since the aim is to create sustainable change in a client’s health and well-being, both successes and nonsuccesses will help the client learn how to support healthy habits and generate lasting transformation.

Health & wellness coaching is whole-person and can address various dimensions in a person’s life. These dimensions are all interconnected and when one is out of balance it can affect many of the other dimensions.
